Today was the final day of the Los Suenos Signature Series Billfishing Championships three day tournament. The previous two days of fishing had put team Rum Runner in striking distance of the coveted tournament win. We all powered out in the morning with visions of Rum soaked victory. Capt. Joey headed out to the zone that we fished the previous days and we all started scanning the horizon for bird action. Capt. Joey spotted some action on the radar a few miles outside. Upon arriving to the spot you could immediately tell that it was about to go down. As we dropped back the lines you could see the rest of the boats a few miles inside, totally unaware we had stumbled on the rally. The next 8 hours I basically saw the most incredible bite that I have ever seen. Perched 50ft up in the tower you could see clear as day sailfish cruising in, lighting up, bashing teasers, tripping rigger clips, and deep throating ballyhoo! Then upon hookup these sailfish went ballistic. I saw sailfish jump and flip in every possible direction. We even had a couple bash the side of the boat! At the end of the day we ended up raising over 40 sailfish, and releasing 9. This put the team in sixth place out of 56 boats. We did not win but everyone was stoked on the result and ready to get the party started. That night we went to the award show complete with fireworks and all the Flor De Cana Gran Reserva you could drink. The party was a blast and went long into the night. In the end it was an incredible experience. We would like to send a giant thanks to Capt. Joey Crawford and Don Carlos Pellas for letting us on the team and for their awesome hospitality. Also a huge thanks to the whole Rum Runner team; Bobby, Martin, Julio, Climaco, and Jose. We had a blast and can’t wait to go again!
